Glossary of Terms - Some terms you might come across

  • multiple - a word meaning "many", since many areas of the brain and spinal cord are affected
  • sclerosis - means scars
  • multiple sclerosis - means many scars
  • spinal cord - main passageway for nerves (like a long highway in the middle of the body)
  • central nervous system - a series of nerves located in the brain and spinal cord
  • myelin - a covering that surrounds the nerve that helps send electrical messages
  • nerve - pathways that electrical messages travel through
  • nerve impulses- electrical messages that travel through the nerves
  • inflammation - swelling or redness of a part of the body. It often causes
    pain and makes that part of the body not work properly.
  • lesions or plaques - are areas of tissue damage caused by inflammation
  • remission - when the disease is stable - things are not changing
  • attack or exacerbation - a time when the disease gets worse
